InDesign Project

These four graphics were designed in Adobe InDesign for our first semester Design Portfolio Project. Also, an evaluation has been written for each graphic.

Design #1: Business Flyer

My flyer is for the business Massar Music which sells a broad assortment of musical gear. The business name is in a large, simple font that has in addition to drop shadow and black stroke has an image of a guitar fret board contained in the text. This enhances the creativity of the flyer and expresses the musical nature of the shop. Under the heading contain a slogan and the main focus of the flyer in the black Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. This large image stands alone with drop shadow added and is made the main focus of the flyer. It represents the music gear the business sells and provides an attractive focus in the flyer. Next to the image of the guitar is a list in bold arial font that sums up the broad range of gear that Massar Music sells. This list has a yellow outer glow to draw more attention. Also, an address and phone number are conveniently located at the bottom and is highlighted in yellow. Overall this flyer has a simple and effective design that grabs the attention of viewer and provides essential information regarding the business. It looks aesthetic and creative contains everything needed to attract customers to the business.

Design #2: Music CD Cover

This CD cover is of the band Sound Threat. The cover is very simple containing only an image of the band on stage that has a dark strokes filter (applied in Adobe Photoshop, then transferred to InDesign) and the name of the band. The name of the band is in a unique font that contains drop shadow and emboss to enhance the look of the name. The white name contrast well with the dark background to create a simple, sleek cover. The back cover contains a similar background photo of the band guitarist that has dark strokes from Photoshop applied to it. The track listing contains an emboss effect to establish itself as the most important text on the back cover. The back cover also contains the band webpage, a barcode, copyright information, publishing information, and the logo of the record company. The font of the track listing is different from all other text to prevent repetitiveness. The times of the tracks are in a smaller font to make the listing look more professional. The copyright info located at the bottom right corner in a smaller font because it is meant to provide information rather than draw attention. The publishing information (giving credit to the band) is in a larger font at the top to express a greater importance than copyright information. The webpage is in a convenient location at the bottom along with the logo of the record company, which is the name of the company “Massar Records” with black stroke on top of an image of a record. This logo is simple and clever and looks professional. Overall, the front and back cover of the CD provide a dark, stylish image of the band that contains a simplistic and effective design. The back provides all of the essential information needed in a visually pleasing way while the simple cover expresses the band’s style and does well to invite people to listen to the music in the CD.

Design #3: Advertisement

This postcard-sized advertisement is designed to advertise a special rock concert sponsored by the non-profit organization “Axis of Justice” created to bring together musicians and fans of music to fight for social justice. The top-left corner contains the name of the organization along with “presents” in black stroke and italic. The name of the organization is bold, white with black stroke text in a red, black stroke box to be seen easily. Stroke is used a lot in this ad to make text more visible and readable. The title of the concert, “Megablast Concert,” is large, bold text that contains an image of fire pasted inside the text in order to represent the image the concert title suggests. This “blasting” image is further expressed by yellow multi-polygon shape that looks like an explosion. This blasting shape is made livelier with yellow outer glow and emboss. The name of the headlining band “Street Sweeper Social Club” is in a large, vertical scaled font with red stroke. The colors red, yellow, and black are used to represent the official colors of the headlining band. The background image is a stylized, dark strokes picture of the band that expresses the image of the concert. Also, additional info such as the names of the other bands as well as the venue, date, and time is located a black bar rectangle at the bottom of the ad. This black section makes essential information about the concert easily readable. Overall the ad looks flashy and impressive creates a lot of flair that would attract people to see this concert.

Design #4: Company Logo

This logo is for Green Acres Landscaping. The basic premise of the logo is an artistic, symbolic rendition of a tree that represents the landscaping service of the Green Acres company. The logo is simple and stylish. It is made by combining three green circles, a brown contoured rectangular shape. The shapes are combined and then emboss is added to make the tree look three-dimensional. The text “Green Acres” and “Landscaping” is then added on top of the tree symbol. “Green Acres” is in a larger and more cursive-looking font while “Landscaping” is in a smaller, all-caps, basic looking font underneath “Green Acres.” The text is also embossed (with drop shadow) to enhance the logo, making it more attractive and professional. The choice of colors in the logo, green and brown, well express nature, trees, and landscaping with the gray color of the text providing contrast and making the company name easily visible. Overall, the logo is very simple, yet perfectly conveys the services of the company (a tree well represented a company involved in landscaping). The logo looks professional, visually appealing, and polished and would serve well to reflect the Green Acres Landscaping company.
